Summer Is the Best Time to Review Your Risk Exposure — Here's Why
August. The pace slows down. Decisions get postponed. Everyone’s on holiday.
And that’s exactly why it’s the best time for something that almost never happens: stepping back and looking at your business from a distance.
Why September Is Always Too Late
Every year, the same pattern.
September: revenue picks back up, new projects, new clients, new decisions. Everything that didn’t get done over the summer goes on the “I’ll look at it later” list.
And risk management — checking whether your business’s current exposure is properly covered — is almost always on that list.
The result: you reach the end of the year with the same picture you had at the beginning. And if something changed in the meantime — new equipment, a new contract, a new risk — that gap remains invisible.
What Changes in a Business Over a Year
More than we usually acknowledge.
Revenue grows — exposure to loss of income changes. New equipment is purchased — the value that needs to be covered changes. A new client contract is signed — contractual liabilities change. New staff are hired — employer liability exposure changes. A new sales channel opens — new risks appear that didn’t exist before.
Each of these alone doesn’t seem critical. Together, they can mean that the coverage you had in January no longer reflects the business you have in August.
What a Risk Exposure Review Actually Involves
It’s a focused review that answers specific questions:
- What has changed in the business since the last time exposure was assessed?
- Are there new risks that didn’t exist before?
- Do current insured values reflect today’s replacement costs?
- Are there coverages that have remained unchanged for years while the business has evolved?
If any of these questions doesn’t have a clear answer, that in itself is information worth acting on.
August Is the Window
You don’t need to be in the office. You don’t need to interrupt your holiday.
It takes less than 3 minutes to see where you stand today — and whether it’s worth taking a closer look in September, rather than adding it to the “later” list again.
